I was never really big on Lana's music, but GODDAYUM did this surprise me! First off, Lana's writing is really damn good. It's nothing out of the ordinary, but it's still effective. Her vocal performances are great and fit the overall softer, stripped-back instrumentation. On that subject, "Norman Fucking Rockwell!" has some of the most beautiful production of the year! Jack Antonoff is in the studio doing what Jack Antonoff does best, and the result is some dreamy aesthetics fitting ... read more
UPDATE (OS: 9.6): Yeah, this really, REALLY shrunk on me and there are a few reasons why. For one, the interludes are getting increasingly awful. Sure, they weren't really necessary in Tool's previous records, but this set of interludes, with the exception of "Chocolate Chip Trip", add absolutely nothing to the entire package. The instrumentation, while still good, isn't really up to snuff. It even leads to a part of the formula that's getting too predictable: the drop D tuning. They ... read more
"Fear of Music" has the all the quirky charm I expected from this madman! The eccentric vocal performances, the fun writing, the stellar instrumentation and amazing production from the Eno man makes this a fine post-punk meal... with a side of political commentary!

Amazing
So, they've gone for a very surf-like aesthetic on this track. Not very fitting for the state of Connecticut, but fitting for the song title. Still, "Sea of Worry" is a fantastic song that carries the dark, reverb-soaked atmosphere and amazing lyricism that have made Have a Nice Life such an amazing band in the first place.
"Talking Heads: 77" is a great introduction to the New Wave sound of Talking Heads. David Byrne's charming performances and writing are on full display here, and the catchy lyrics and great instrumentation help further this, at the time, very new sound. It's not as legendary as their following efforts, though, despite having "Psycho Killer" in the tracklist.

"Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Live Forever" is handles its post-rock roots miles better than its predecessor. The crescendos are better-written, the production is grand and noisy and the instruments are gorgeously-textured.

These song titles... they're just friggin' amazing! "My Stereo Has Mono And So Does My Girlfriend" is fucking brilliant. Notice that I'm talking about the tracklist more than the tracks themselves? Yeah, I got nothing from it.

Rapsody gives it her all on "Eve". Her rap versatility, the pitch-perfect casting, the brilliant sampling and the great production make this one of the best hip hop albums of the year!

Eww. Okay. I felt like I needed to start this review over because the last one disgusted me.
So, "Human After All" is definitely Daft Punk's weakest record. It can feel pretty rushed and a few of the tracks outstay their welcome. But this is their most abrasive and gritty offering to date, scrapping the pop direction that defined "Discovery" and replacing it with something far more repetitive and minimalist. This might've turned off plenty of fans, but I ... read more
"Anak Ko" is a beautiful record. The production and instrumentation are crisp and clean, the lyrics are very introspective and the atmosphere is absolutely calming, with every hint of reverb just forcing me to relax myself and take my mind off things. I definitely recommend this to people looking for that sweet spot near the end of the summer.

You know what? I enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting. It's a VERY flawed album, don't get me wrong. This album is a mess, with some of the production being very pretty while others being generic. The writing is a mixed bag and it has a couple of the worst songs of the year. But really, what else was I expecting from an artist like Taylor Swift? It's never going to be boundary-pushing and it's never going to be the most well-written thing ever. "Lover" gives us exactly what ... read more
Tropical Fuck Storm releases another raw, bonkers and politically-charged record that, while it doesn't plummet to the Earth as ferociously as "A Laughing Death In Meatspace", it delivers the same quirky instrumentation, noisy production, imaginative writing and great vocals while also going for a more slow-burning approach.

Yeah... I can't help but feel disappointed, especially after "iridescence" and "ARIZONA BABY". I like the new direction BROCKHAMPTON is taking and the production is mostly great. A lot of the verses are well-done too. Though I'm a little bit surprised by Dom and Merlyn being the standouts here. There's also a few songs that are legitimately outstanding, with "SUGAR" and "NO HALO" being a couple of their best tracks to date. But all of this could've been ... read more
"reputation" is an album.
Scratch that.
"reputation" is a 55-minute dumpster fire of blandness. The production is as offensively generic as electropop can get, the lyrics are horrid and it tries WAAAAYYY to hard to be edgy, most of it coming off as cringe-worthy. There are a few songs that are passable at best but the record overall is just unbearably pretentious.

I mean, it can be pretty at times, but it pales in comparison to post-rock albums before it. Everything important about the genre is here, but Explosions In The Sky never do anything to make themselves stand out.

On Talk Talk's defining moment in their career, "Laughing Stock" refines the sound that made up "Spirit of Eden" into something that would influence so many other artists for many a decade! A gorgeous, calming, atmospheric, emotional and at times haunting post-rock masterpiece.

Droning, ambient soundscapes? Drawn-out lengths? Cinematic atmospheres? That sounds like the beginning of a new genre, and Talk Talk has achieved success in innovating rock norms. "Spirit of Eden" is a beautiful, tranquil and majestic listen that I highly recommend to any post-rock fan.
