Pink Floyd - A Saucerful of Secrets
82

While "A Saucerful of Secrets" isn't exactly as wonderful as "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn", it's still a great record with fantastic instrumentation and solid writing from Syd Barrett, who, sadly, left the band shortly after.

Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
90

I completely forgot that Death Grips sampled this album in "I Want It I Need It". So when the riff came on in "Interstellar Overdrive", I was so, so happy that I subconsciously mouthed the hook!

After listening to Pink Floyd's classics, I thought this was going to be a strictly poppier album. But it's actually surprisingly ambitious for a debut album. Honestly, I should've seen that coming. Moving on, "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" is a fun, psychedelic album ... read more

Slauson Malone 1 - A Quiet Farwell, 2016-2018
94

What was I even hearing? How do you make something like this?

Okay, it took me a really long time to even process this, mostly because the amount of emotions I was getting from this album were insane! The first few tracks was like "what the fuck?". The rest of the first half I was still a little overwhelmed by what in the hell was happening, but I was keeping up. Then, the entire second half was like a gigantic punch to the face and my emotions were all over the freaking place!

Foxygen - Seeing Other People

While there were a few cuts on here that are mediocre at best, "Seeing Other People" is a hooky and well-produced, albeit messy, record in Foxygen's discography

MARINA - Love + Fear
48

There's not much to say about "Love + Fear" that hasn't been said before. There's nothing here that hasn't been done on other pop albums before. Marina did better than this and I'm just gonna leave it at that.

Sunn O))) - Life Metal

I mean... I liked it? I loved the daunting chords at first but then it kind of dissolved after the first track. There were some details I liked (the female vocals on "Between Sleipnir's Breaths" and the synths on "Troubled Air"), though. I see this clicking once I dive into Sunn O)))'s catalog but drone metal ain't really mah thang.

Okay

AJR - Neotheater
28

If you switch the letters of their label, BMG, you get BGM. This fails to even pass off as background music.

So this is much better than "The Click", but that's not saying a lot. The production is weak, sometimes outright horrible, the lyrics are absolute teenage-pandering garbage and "Neotheater" is still filled to the brim with the millennial pop cliches that made their previous records so unbearable.

Aldous Harding - Designer

2019 is already an amazing year for female artists and Aldous Harding is no exception. "Designer" is a meticulously composed, immaculately produced and beautifully performed record that engages with strong lyricism and timely themes. Do NOT miss out on this!

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Fishing for Fishies
90

Someone help! I think I got infected by the... by the... B O O G I E D I S E A S E!!!

"Fishing For Fishies" is definitely the most fun I've had with an album this year! The styles of boogieing Stu and Ambrose tackle are extremely varied here and the production is spot-on in each and every track! The whole record is infectious and cohesive, and it makes it more prominent that King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are one of the most prolific and original bands out there!

Xiu Xiu - FORGET

"FORGET" is probably Xiu Xiu's best pop-centered album yet. The production is hauntingly gorgeous, the lyrics are painfully sad and Jamie's voice makes it all the more emotional, probably some of their most emotional songwriting in a long time.

Xiu Xiu - Plays The Music of Twin Peaks
94

Xiu Xiu and Twin Peaks are like a match made in Hell and their renditions of the classic soundtrack does not disappoint! The absolute weirdness of Xiu Xiu brings the classic TV show's soundtrack to new, experimental heights only peaked by Jamie Stewart's deranged ramblings and hectic instrumentation! Overall, this is a great example of why the band is so forward-thinking when approaching simple music concepts.

Kevin Abstract - ARIZONA BABY
93

Kevin Abstract is at peak form, delivering what is the most vulnerable, poignant and honest set of tracks on a BROCKHAMPTON project to date. The lyrical themes of being an outcast, whether it be in terms of race or sexuality, still resonates with me and I have no doubt that it will do the same to a lot of other people. Combined with the infectious hooks and phenomenal production from Jack Antonoff and Romil, “ARIZONA BABY” is one of this year’s standout records!

Xiu Xiu - Angel Guts: Red Classroom
68

"Angel Guts: Red Classroom" is like absolute torture if torture dropped the soap in Hell and got fucked by Michael Vic with a chainsaw smoking 20 cigarettes simultaneously while watching re-runs of Seinfield on Huluflix. Jamie's vocals are as eccentric as ever and the production is freaky as hell! But I would've loved the avant-garde direction a bit more if some of the tracks were more fleshed out in their sonic delivery.

Xiu Xiu - Nina
85

If you're expecting a collection of straightforward covers of Nina Simone's classics, then you're pretty much looking at the wrong album. These are bizarre, creepy, batshit insane renditions of songs like "Wild Is the Wind" and "Pirate Jenny". But if you forget this is a Nina Simone tribute album, this is probably one of the most unique records you'll hear this decade. The arrangements are absolute nonsense (in a very, very good way) and Jamie Stewart's strange, haunting ... read more

This album is a pretty cool idea that fits very well with the artwork. It's like the soundtrack to a hard-R dystopian cyberpunk vampire movie!

Wolfmother - Wolfmother
81

My 12-year-old self would've loved the living shit out of this band. These guys sound like if you took any famous hard rock band from the 70's and mixed them with The White Stripes. Is it by any means original? Not at all. But is it at least enjoyable? Hell yes! The whole album is filled to the brim with anthemic energy and awesome guitar riffs! In fact, it's so fun that it's easy to forgive the rather cliched-as-hell writing... kinda.

A Perfect Circle - Eat the Elephant
44

Holy fuck that album cover...

Ok... that has got to be one of the worst artworks I've ever seen! The make-up and Photoshop jobs are horrible enough but... just look at what he's eating! I believe that is not an elephant, Mister Keenan.

Not gonna lie, the first half is actually really good. Tracks 2-6 are some of the strongest material A Perfect Circle have released to date! After that, the whole thing collapses HARD and I mean HAAARD! The rest of the album is filled with horrible compositions ... read more

TOOL - 10,000 Days
91

Even when I'm saying this is Tool's weakest LP, I'm not saying much because "10,000 Days" is still an excellent record! It carries the strengths that made their other releases great! The instrumentation is phenomenal, the mixing is spot-on and Maynard James Keenan's vocals are still amazing! I also believe this is his most personal record, with the majority of the tracklist talking about his late mother who passed away after living with paralysis for 27 years. That being said, this ... read more
