tyler, the creator – wolf

tyler, the creator’s wolf is an album that marked a shift in his artistry, showcasing both his growth as a producer and his willingness to explore more personal themes. while it still carries some of the shock-value humor and rebellious energy of goblin, wolf feels more refined, more sonically cohesive, and, at times, more emotionally raw. this is where tyler’s production truly starts to shine—his use of lush, jazzy chords and layered instrumentation creates a dreamy, melancholic atmosphere that elevates the album beyond just a collection of rap tracks. however, while wolf is a significant step forward, it’s not without its flaws, with some tracks feeling underdeveloped or out of place
the album is structured around a loose narrative following tyler’s alter ego, wolf, and his interactions with characters like sam and dr. tc. it’s a continuation of the storytelling approach found in his previous albums, though at times, the concept takes a backseat to personal introspection and braggadocious raps. despite its inconsistencies, wolf remains a solid and important chapter in tyler’s evolution as an artist
favorite tracks:
answer – this is one of tyler’s most heartfelt and personal songs, addressing his absent father with a mix of anger, sadness, and longing. the way he raps over the melancholic electric guitar and soulful chords makes this track feel deeply raw and honest. his delivery is restrained but emotional, making every word hit harder
ifhy – this track is both unsettling and mesmerizing. pharrell’s influence on the production is clear, with the warped synths and off-kilter drums creating an eerie, dreamlike atmosphere. tyler’s verses explore a toxic, love-hate relationship, and his frustrated delivery perfectly conveys the emotional turmoil. the sudden shift to the outro, featuring a smooth, dreamy transition, makes this one of the most dynamic tracks on the album
colossus – often compared to eminem’s stan, this track is tyler’s take on obsessive fandom, told from the perspective of a fan approaching him at an amusement park. it’s darkly humorous, slightly unsettling, and showcases tyler’s storytelling ability. the production is simple but effective, letting the lyrics take center stage
rusty – this track feels like a throwback to old odd future energy, featuring solid verses from domo genesis and earl sweatshirt. tyler’s verse is particularly sharp, addressing criticism and media perception of him. the production is ominous and heavy, making this one of the hardest-hitting tracks on wolf
least favorite tracks:
trashwang – this track is pure chaotic energy, but it feels unnecessary within the context of the album. while the aggressive posse-cut style might appeal to some fans of old odd future, it comes across as more of a throwaway track rather than something that contributes to wolf's themes or sound
parking lot – while the jazzy beat is nice, the song itself feels forgettable compared to the stronger moments on the album. it lacks the emotional weight or the creative energy that makes other tracks stand out
tamale – probably the most overrated track on the album. while it’s fun and energetic, it feels like tyler forcing himself into his old edgy, goofy persona, even as the rest of the album leans towards a more refined, introspective sound. it’s not a terrible track, but it sticks out in a way that makes the album feel slightly unfocused. please understand my take... ;(
final thoughts:
wolf is an important turning point in tyler’s career, showing his evolution as a producer and a songwriter. while it still has some of the rough edges and inconsistencies of his earlier work, it also contains some of his most emotionally powerful and well-crafted tracks. the production is lush and layered, and when tyler is at his best, he delivers some of his most memorable songs. while not his greatest album, wolf is still a strong effort and a significant step in his artistic journey
overall, while not tyler's best work, this album is good 👍
