Aside from the first two songs, nothing really sticks out here in a good way. The production is just so tacky and sugary it ruins a lot of the moments on here which honestly could've probably been decent.
Not a fan of the vocals either. If it wasn't for the good faith of the first two songs and certain "fine" sections in a couple other songs, I'd probably hate this a lot more.
This thing is just incredible and it makes the mixed reception of the two albums that came after this way more understandable. This is like some of the greatest, most chilling alternative rock I've ever heard.
I prefer the more stoner rock vibes of their early albums over the atmosphere here, but damn aside from that this is actually their best album.
Honestly expected this thing to be a masterpiece considering how legendary "Be Quiet and Drive" is, but instead it's just really good so now I'm just kinda disappointed even though I still really like this album quite a bit.
A lesson in managing expectations I guess.
Angry British man with a raspy voice yelling about leftist politics over crispy post-punk basslines for 42 minutes.
It does go really hard a lot of the time, although it does feel a tad one dimensional at certain points musically. The witty lyrics and social commentary is honestly what makes this stand out the most. The very prominent commentary on homophobia, toxic masculinity and immigration is quite well executed and makes some of the lower points on this album feel a bit more substantial ... read more
Unless you don't want to lose any hopes of having a nice life, listen to Have A Nice Life.
Sounds like a way more dead album than either Boxer or Alligator. This album sounds like working in a poorly lit office during a very gray rainy day.
I kind of dig the subtle vibe but I also enjoyed the soundscapes on their last two albums a little more. Some absolutely excellent tracks on here which feel like they nail this kind of style perfectly, although I'd probably return to Boxer's best songs over a lot of these.
Gross, filthy and uninviting album, but it does go quite hard.
I don't think this kind of industrial rock sound is really for me, but I can't deny that it does build a very interesting atmosphere that feels like smelling gasoline and lead paint.
I probably won't be returning much to this album, but I can't deny how well it achieves what it sets out to do.
Loving the atmosphere and the vibes of this thing overall.
The vocals and the lyrics stood out as a little weird sometimes, which did take me out of the experience, but when this album connects it's absolutely amazing. This kind of noisy atmospheric alternative rock is really up my alley.
Too damn long and I wish Anthony Kiedis would just shut the fuck up sometimes.
When there isn't a dumbass telling you you're a lonely loser for listening to Radiohead, this shit is pretty good.
It's like if Cage The Elephant tried to go for the AM era Arctic Monkeys vibe.
It's about as mid and dull as it sounds.
Thank you @Marshall4Real for this recommendation!
This style of music really isn't for me, but I enjoyed the soundscape on some of the songs. It's really not that bad and seems pretty well made for the style it's going for. My favorite songs are probably diamond geisha and first leviathan.
It is a nice palette cleanser from what I usually listen to, but it's definetly not my cup of tea. I think some of the subtle moments on here do sound really nice, but when this album ... read more
Aside from the sometimes kinda annoying vocals and the fact that there's a significant language barrier, this thing goes really hard. The performances are quite awesome and the production sounds really good. This thing just sounds awesome, powerful, badass and it doesn't overstay its welcome.
👍👍👍
"One of the more exciting pop-rock acts in recent memory" my ass.
Dude this album is actually so boring. I like some of the ideas and sounds this album attempts to do, but Jesus the execution is just so boring. Like, I just don't get the hype for this at all, not even the highest rated tracks on here did much for me. "Somebody Else" literally sounds like a Weeknd song, but with all of the soul stripped out of it. Literal definition of background noise.
And when this ... read more
It has some incredible songs but overall this really just isn't quite my style. I thought it was a bit too long, slow and boring at places for me to enjoy it more.
Still, I like this album but I don't really love it. Maybe with more listens I might find more to appreciate here.
The National's brand of moody cubicle office worker post-punk really speaks to me and even here where it doesn't quite feel as lush or as textured as on the follow up it still sounds really pleasant.
The foundation for Boxer is truely set on this album, even if the sound here is a bit more straightforward than the chamber influences that would become a bit more prominent later on.
This album kicks ass and there's plenty of songs on here that could be debateably their best, ... read more
This music is a bit too tame and not good enough for the Gallagher brothers to be acting like they're the best band ever.
I do like this album well enough, but my main issue is that the production sounds a bit too muddy and the songs sound a bit too monotonous. Both of these issues are kinda fixed on the follow up, but here it becomes a drag.
Also why are these songs so long? Most of these songs are like over 4 and a half minutes long and most of them don't feel like they deserve ... read more
Wow I love basic riffs, tryhard edgy lyrics, annoying vocals and sugary production that makes every breakdown on this album sound like a grating wall of noise that's identical to the last one.
How did you know?
I've been on this website for years at this point and only now I have rated a Radiohead album. Anyways great and very influential album, really all I can say is that I agree with what everyone else says about it.
This statement is so vague it could probably apply to literally any beloved album, but that's kind of all my tired ass could be bothered to type out right now.
