Kanye West - JESUS IS KING

Wake up, Mr. Jesus!

Jesus, if you can hear me from Heaven, please help me. Me? I'm a poor human, my name is Math, something happened to me today... something horrible. I am not a christian, I am an atheist, but I have decided to write this review as a kind of prayer, I would like you to hear me even if you are probably lounging in a deckchair on a cloud as I speak to you...

You know, Kanye West is one of my favorite artists of all time, he has played a very important role in my life. Like some kind of God, actually. I don't know if you're interested, but he's the creative genius behind a lot of classics: "The College Dropout" (clearly one of my 10 favorite hip-hop albums of all time), "Late Registration", the revolutionary record "808s & Heartbreak" and 2 excellent albums in the 2010's: the ambitious "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" and the unloved "Yeezus". These albums are real works of adventurous art...

However, I think you know, not all artists can create an album as exceptional as "The College Dropout" nine times. Each artist declines. Each god of music is one day nailed to a cross. As time passes, an artist may no longer be able to create masterpieces (Example: Wu-Tang and Public Enemy in the 21st century, Bob Dylan in the 1980s). And with Kanye West, I'm sad to tell you that we're entering a post-Ye period, and that's not a good thing. "Ye" is clearly the only Kanye West album that is not a masterpiece in my opinion, even if there are some fantastic moments on this record. "Kids See Ghosts" is totally incredible, Mr. West does a wonderful job at the production but, I'm sorry, it's a Kid Cudi feat. Kanye West album. And now we have "Jesus Is King". Yes, don't act like a star, Jesus, because in this album, Kanye has transformed yourself into corny and very bland songs.

I am sure that all this is very comforting for Kanye to praise his Lord and fight his mental problems through the power of the religious community and music, etc. You know, he's bipolar and he's become one of the most hated men in the United States. It's not always easy for him. He must feel good now, I hope so. But for us, the humans, the fans, this songs are drafts, demos without flavours and real gospel energy. All the potential joy and pleasure in a contemporary gospel album replaced by... I don't really know what it is, I wish it wasn't a Kanye album...

Stay with me, Jesus, I'm not finished. I know, I have a tendency to write very long reviews. I must admit: "Jesus is King" is Kanye West's worst album ever. No doubt about it. The album was the subject of controversy during its production and release. But hey, that's not my problem here. "Jesus Is King" is the first album he ever made that is simply awful and absolutely soulless. Of the eleven tracks, only "Follow God", "Selah", "Everything We Need" are really substantial and interesting. Everything else here is terrible, and I wonder if it's really the same person who created "The College Dropout". Hey. "Closed on Sundays" has such a laughable hook and looks like a bad Christmas song otherwise. "Everything we need" is good but too short for Ty Dolla $ign and Ant Clemons to really shine. "God Is" is... Bland. Not to mention Kanye's really awful singing here. Kanye's hook on "Use this Gospel" is nil. Honestly, I waited so long for Clipse to return and this is my reward? Fuck. It's really annoying. There's practically nothing in this album that's worthwhile. Maybe the production... I thought the beats were good early on, which was enough to overlook the lyrics ("Before the Flood, people judge, they did the same thing to Noah / Everybody wanted Yandhi, then Jesus Christ did the laundry?"). The songs here are falling flat. And despite all these discussions about the fact that it is a "Christian" album, West's message goes no further than the rhetoric. Sorry, Jesus.

Do I need to say anything else? I hope you will understand me, Jesus. I know there's nothing you can do for me. Maybe a miracle? You make this album disappear from Kanye's discography by snapping your fingers or something. No. It wouldn't be fair to those who have liked this record...

Fuck it. You know what, I'm gonna listen to "Jesus Walks" now.

Best tracks: "Selah", "Follow God", "Everything We Need".

Worst track: "Closed On Sunday"

I get that everyone has different opinions and shit but if you think College Dropout is his best album you're straight retarded. You sound like the type of person that rates Kanye's album like this:
1- College Dropout
2- Late Registration
3- Graduation
4- MBDTF
5- Yeezus
6- Ye
7- TLOP
8- Jesus is King
9- His next project
Lmao I miss the old Kanye ass nigga

@DonatoBurroni Sorry, man, but I have no idea what you're talking about... Anyone who thinks that The College Dropout is his best album is no more "straight retarted" than those who think it's MBDTF or those who think it's Yeezus. Yes it's true that my two favorite Kanye albums are CD and LR, but I'm not a Kanye Old Heads for that matter. I love Kanye's more experimental albums in the 2010's, I prefer YZ and TLOP to Graduation and 808's tbh.

That's how I'll actually rank Kanye's albums:
1. College Dropout
2. Late Registration
3. Yeezus
4. MBDTF
5. TLOP
6. 808s (Don't forget this one 😉)
7. Graduation
8. Ye
9. Jesus Is King

And I like all this albums except JIK

@DonatoBurroni You can have TCD as your fav Kanye album and still show a ton of appreciation for new Kanye, tf?. Stop trying to shame people by leaving these salty, toxic comments. At least consider reading the review before commenting, y'know?

Wouldn't be surprised if @DonatoBurroni is just a troll account. No point in trying to rationalise with people that won't listen

@DonatoBurroni someone got rob'ed with the ratings, huh
Oct 28, 2019
I can name at least 3 songs in this project that are better than Jesus Walks
Oct 28, 2019
@DonatoBurroni Okay, man, good for you. But that's not really relevant. This review represents MY opinion on this record. Music is subjective, in my opinion Jesus Walks is better than all JIK songs and you won't change my mind.
