John Coltrane - Ascension

The first track on here alone already shows that at this point in his career Coltrane was a powerhouse in the realm of jazz. Opening up with this 19 minute opus consisting of consistently shifting and changing instrumental passages that manage to sound both very unorganized and confused and very intentional and purposeful at the same time, the track creates this feeling of looseness, of weightlessness almost, that is both impressive on a technical level and also an incredibly immersive experience. The second track, as well as the second part of this album, feels like a perfect continuation of all the momentum that the first track built up, even fading out and back in again with the second track making it practically feel like a brief intermission in between songs. This second movement not only keeps that same momentum, but makes the whole thing feel complete by the end. I'm not entirely sure if this is my favorite Coltrane release, although it is certainly his most impressive from a technical standpoint.
