Can't believe I'm about to use the word 'mid' to refer to Björk.
'Debut' is unfortunately, too frontloaded, with an ebuillient, energetic and evocative first half that was unable to carry its momentum to the second. After 'Big Time Sensuality' everything just sort of fell apart.
Bjork's music has been notoriously difficult to get into, an experience shared by myself. But even with the weirder cuts on her subsequent 3 releases, upon first listen there was always at least one aspect of the song I appreciated, or had understood fundamentally what it was going for. But with the puzzling headscratchers on this album such as 'Aeroplane' and 'The Anchor Song', I couldn't find anything on the song to anchor myself (pun-intended) onto. Whether that be sonically, melodically or instrumentally.
The jazz and house mix on 'Debut' is an interesting concept, but it confuses more often than it rewards. The pure house anthems on this album, such as 'Crying' and 'There's More To Life Than This', will stay within my rotation, as for the rest? I'd just listen to 'Post' instead.
