Lana Del Rey - Norman Fucking Rockwell!

not to be "that guy," but i think people have been approaching this album in the wrong way. this is not an easy-listening album; if you take it as one, then it is very understandably a 7-8/10 album. the way this album succeeds is in its recurring themes ("world-building"), its lyrics, and how its composition compliments those lyrics.

the album as a whole is the romantic pursual of lost americana physically represented by a man, her love interest. she's constantly chasing ... read more

i've listened to this album four times over now, and i still do not understand why it is so universally agreed upon to be as good as it is. i understand critics and listeners alike agreeing that this album is "good," but i do not understand how basically anyone could walk away thinking this album is even close to the greatest of all time when i fail to see how it is doing anything "musically" impressive; there are very potent and expressive themes on this record, but the ... read more

massively better than their previous record. I actually find myself revisiting storm semi-frequently. after that, we're met with the same luxurious background music. i will say this one conveys a more interesting story though. when i first discovered this album a little over two years ago i read somewhere that it was meant to convey the apocalypse. i'm choosing to believe that was the intended interpretation

despite how impressive this album may be, i can't ever see myself sitting down and paying attention to it other than during my initial listening. i'm convinced people like the "concept" of this album more than the album itself. the same is probably true for me as well; however, it is "good" so to speak

sharp songwriting and fiona's sound is as unmistakable as always, but at times does feel a bit heavy-handed

About

i believe good music has two objectives: to create unique, captivating instrumentals and to synthesize them with well-written, meaningful lyrics. to prioritize one while half-assing the other would be a disservice to the artistic potential songwriting has.

anyway, for the 2 people who read my reviews this is how i score albums:
100 — masterpiece, inconsequential flaws
90 — phenomenal, minimal flaws
80 — innovative, noticeable flaws
70 — above average
60 — good
50 — standard
40 — unmemorable etc
