Falls of Rauros - Patterns in Mythology

Going through some more albums from last year.

Out of curiosity I gave the genre of atmospheric black metal a chance since I had previously dabbled in a couple of post-metal albums before this, so I decided to give this one a shot. However, after giving this thing a listen, I wasn't too thrilled with checking out more from the genre.

In general, I really didn't find this album all that interesting sonically. Though the album certainly has its loud parts and its quiet parts, I really felt that the compositions on this album were quite linear. There are some moments of beauty and some moments of brutality, but it may be that I feel like the typical black metal instrumentation fail to deliver the proper amounts of "oomph" that I am looking for. I'll spare the album my slaughtering by acknowledging the parts where the album shines somewhat, but for the most part, the album really is too flat for me.
