Common - Nobody's Smiling

Common host a conscious album teetering between cutting-edge hip-hop trends and pop influenced songwriting that balances nicely for all its eccentricities even those in fault. Much like the Roots and Pharoahe Monch, now is a good time for poetry and realism in the rap game; unlike those, Common shows real potential for pop crossover territory with his songwriting, as strong as his acting. Like John Legend's album last year, however, though immaculately crafted, I dont see much chance for any real critical promotion or sales records being broken.

I agree with you for the most part save for the pop-sensibilities in the songwriting. I feel that this is more evident and prevalent in the features and production even though not in the strictly generic sense of mainstream pop. Great perspective on the album though.
