Tiny Mix Tapes

Test Pattern showcases Ikeda’s ability to derive meaning out of the most stripped-down sounds. A veritable Morse code awaits the listener on Test Pattern, with every sound dissected to its subatomic particles.

An attempt of any kind to review the album track-by-track would prove pointless. Test Pattern captivates as a whole work unto itself, lacking any singles or other such familiar tropes to the world of popular music.

Coke Machine Glow

Test Pattern will inevitably make an impression, be it positive or not. Now if I can only get that ringing out of my ears.

A one-of-a-kind minimalist sensory experience. This album feels like getting your eardrums gently caressed by blips of static while also being repeatedly shot in the throat with airsoft pellets for an hour. I'm glad to say that I loved every second of it, and it created a whole visual world of sound in my head.

Many skittering beeps and rhythms, with quite drastic variations of pitch. Although a lot of this album’s sound and composition is very similar to Dataplex, I found it to be a bit less compelling and engaging overall compared to that. It has some great moments scattered throughout, but the experience falls flat at some points, and doesn’t hold my interest as much as Dataplex does, even if the progression between tracks is still well executed.
