With Step 666 coming out on the final Never Say Die Volume showcase, I need to talk about LAXX and his famous Step series.
Having relistened to the series yesterday, i was surprised how it still holds up. Step One is the first of the series from the unique trap producer LAXX. His sound created the forgotten sub genre of trap called Braintwitch, a style that only LAXX can produce.

This is actually a pretty decently aged EP from LAXX. Unlike other trap music from the similar time period this came out in, the ideas are executed good enough to be listenable, but not good enough to be memorable. The drum & bass remix of "The Unknown" is fucking great and a highlight of the EP.
Something about the sound of this record is very peculiar. The mix comes across as oddly hollow; I can't quite put my finger on exactly why, but it almost feels like there's no reverb anywhere. Everything feels incredibly dry somehow.
The drops don't do much to make up for it either. The snares and claps stick out way too much in the mix, and not in a good way. While I understand this was the dominant sound in EDM trap at the time, many of the drops feel surprisingly weak and ... read more
