Desolate thoughts manages to make a depressive brand of black metal that is not oppressive. Very atmospheric and pushed back. All moments blend into a dizzying haze.
Desolate Thoughts' self-titled LP may have had some promise as a concept: the guitars actually follow pretty standard but good melodic lines that fit the DSBM soundscape, and it seems like the intention of the bassist was to put tension and dissonance into the mix... That idea in execution, however, leads to one of the most frustrating listening experiences in DSBM, where the bassist seems to be hitting all the wrong notes to make it sound annoying instead of full of tension.
