At seventy minutes, it is their most expansive statement yet, and it carries the weight of that ambition without once buckling under it.
It’s been a long wait for new Barnett material, but it’s been worth it. By deftly combining angular rhythms, spiky guitars and moments of lush indie pop, she’s managed to marry her ever-maturing songwriting and trademark lyricism into something that genuinely resonates — but is also just damn fun to listen to.
With only one relatively short album used as a basis for the comp, there’s some repetition over the course of the deluxe edition’s tracklist. It’s a relatively small squabble, though, an unavoidable conceptual one. ‘Mixes Of A Lost World’, for the most part, is a varied, refreshing listen.
‘For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women)’ is Michelle Zauner’s most mature offering to date, and one that grows on you with every listen. This is a record to get lost in, an album to soundtrack your moments of reflection. Bewitching, bold and most importantly fresh territory.
‘I Blow Out Big Candles’ is a fun time that hints at something very exciting next time around.
There was an inkling in Cureheads’ hearts that frontman Robert Smith still had another grand, heart-breaking statement in him… and they weren’t wrong.
This is a stunning return that makes us more excited for the whole package.
The La Luz we knew is dead, but in its place is a band well-timed to enjoy the full-blown psych explosion that’s grabbed the indie world these past few years.
