John Zorn - Pellucidar: A Dreamers Fantabula
AllMusic
80

Pellucidar is another great offering from Zorn's most accessible project.

Anarchist Republic of Bzzz - Anarchist Republic of Bzzz
AllMusic
60
There are no musical samples, no beats, no bass, and no drums. Ladd and Sensational have very different styles, but the dark production holds it together nicely. The remixes at the end of the CD (missing on the LP) do add some beats and additional instrumentation, but this is still one of the strangest hip-hop albums you're likely to hear.
Ahleuchatistas - Of the Body Prone
AllMusic
90
This music is clearly not for everyone, but those who make the commitment will be richly rewarded. It's the new post-everything instrumental onslaught. Impressive stuff.
John Frusciante - The Empyrean
AllMusic
70

Frusciante has done a nice job of carving an identity completely separate from his main gig, and Empyrean fits nicely with his other solo albums.

Colin Stetson - New History Warfare Vol. 1
AllMusic
90

New History Warfare, Vol. 1 is a truly impressive, fully formed, and highly individual musical statement.

Wicked Witch - Chaos: 1978-86
AllMusic
60

This is definitely unique stuff but some of it has a tendency to go on a bit longer than necessary. And considering that all the material ... comes from two 7"'s and one 12" single (and unreleased remixes), the fact is that there just isn't a lot of meat on these bones. Caveat Emptor.

Vijay Iyer & Mike Ladd - Still Life With Commentator
AllMusic
70

Still Life with Commentator isn't an easy listen, but it wasn't meant to be.

Electric Masada - At the Mountains of Madness
AllMusic
80

Thanks to their improvisational skills, you hardly notice that the program is much the same on both discs. Score another one for John Zorn and company. At the Mountains of Madness is a winner.

Korekyojinn - Isotope
AllMusic
80
Yoshida/Ruins fans will eat this up, but anyone interested in punk/funk instrumentals or math rock should really check this out. Hot stuff.
Homayun Sakhi - Music of Central Asia, Vol. 3: The Art of the Afghan Rubâb
AllMusic
90
This collaborative release between Smithsonian/Folkways and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture earns high marks for its informative presentation and educational aspects, but just as importantly, Homayun Sakhi has turned in a remarkable performance, breathing new life into this ancient form.
Fred Frith & John Zorn - 50th Birthday Celebration, Vol. 5
AllMusic
80
The interplay is simply amazing. Much of it is what you'd expect from free improv, but there are a handful of beautiful, lyrical moments, like those that close the set. Any fan of free improvisation will be thrilled. It doesn't get much better than this.
Agata - Spike
AllMusic
70
This is not easy listening, but there is a great level of sonic detail in Agata's executions, and he clearly knows what he's doing with his effects.
山本精一 [Seiichi Yamamoto] - Baptism
AllMusic
80

Subdued and contemplative, Baptism shows a very different side to Seiichi.

Locus Solus - 50th Birthday Celebration, Vol. 3
AllMusic
80
The level of communication between players is stunning, developing lurching, spastic grooves that then get blown apart like ducks in a shooting gallery.
Ayuo / Ohta Hiromi - Red Moon
AllMusic
90
Almost everything is sung in Japanese (there is a little English), which juxtaposes nicely with the music, creating a sensation of both familiarity and utter uniqueness. This is a recording that transcends borders, styles, and even description. Highly recommended.
Hoahio - Peek-Ara-Boo
AllMusic
80
The production is wonderful, and while there's plenty of ear candy, the album is never busy sounding or overdone. The second half of the album takes a bit of a mellow turn, but all of it is interesting. Recommended to fans of experimental avant pop.
