Admirably, they’ve swerved mawkishness and self-pity – no funereal ballads, no clichéd elegies, just brutal yet deceptively streamlined noise, the way they’ve always done it. The tribute he deserved.

It’s all too little too late to restore this once-feted group to the elevated position they held 30 years ago, but that probably isn’t the point. But it is a fine farewell to a band who have given more than most.

Will the world miss Megadeth when they’re gone? Undoubtedly. Is this the perfect goodbye? Not so much. It turns out these eternal survivors have gone out with neither a whimper nor a snarl. Imagine what the old Dave Mustaine would have to say about that.
