As Idol prepares to turn 70 later this year, he may be dwelling a tad too much on the twists and turns of his life to date. But he remains a hero of the “no heroes” generation, and there aren’t too many of those left.

This record may not win the band many new converts, although it’s as good a place as any to sign up. But for veterans, and those who knew them in past lives but haven’t followed their many regenerations, it’s a rewarding work that charts the realms other artists cannot reach.
