In every direction SMILE! :D goes, from electropop with extremely catchy synth lines to indietronica and acoustic guitars, Porter remains honest and vulnerable. He sings about the parasocial relationships between artists and their fans, mental health and depression, regrets and nostalgia. It feels emotional and raw, and although not every song it a hit, the album comes together very well despite the stylistic differences between the individual tracks.
