Mac Miller - Balloonerism

Kanye West once said: ‘Nothing in life is promised except death’.

Mac Miller passed away in 2018, at the age of 26. His latest posthumous release, ‘Balloonerism’, was recorded around 2014, with leaks appearing in 2020. 11 years after its creation, the album has been officially released. ‘Balloonerism’ is a prophetic album, as Miller explores themes around his drug use and thoughts on death, which sound very chilling and heartbreaking in retrospect. The beauty of art is that its limits are only defined by the limitations of the human mind.

The result is a collage of video-game soundtracks, and electro-funk beats all underlined by a theme of traditional Asian soundscapes.

Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory

At the turn of the millennia, the United States had just started recovering from the most chaotic decade in memorable history; a President embroiled in scandal, the consumption of media permanently being altered by the internet, and fear of a computer bug causing the apocalypse. For the generation reaching adulthood, there had never been a more confusing time to grow up in, and thus, ‘The Millennials’ were brought into a world that felt nothing but alien.

Hole - Live Through This

Troubled souls create troubling art.

Heart-pumping, cathartic and unapologetically raw; the work of Hole is a glimpse into the heavy, dystopian life of Courtney Love. Most know Love as the late Kurt Cobain’s wife, but she is, in her own right, one of the most significant artists of the 90s Grunge movement. Hole’s magnum opus, ‘Live Through This’, is a distilled account of Love’s darkest experiences, channeled through earth-shattering grunge.
