I like this album a lot both as music to put in the background and as well-crafted storytelling. Cole's storytelling is full of twists and very new to me in my very limited experience hip-hop (like him disavowing the crown on "Fire Squad"). The wholesomeness is also incredibly welcome, such as in songs like '03 Adolescence and especially Love Yours. Kendrick Lamar - Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers

Must listen? Yes. But this is undoubtedly flawed. I don't particularly love some of the sound of this album, as it doesn't have the degree of polish that I like. However, I love the theme of mental heath in this album, the attempt (well-executed or not) to address homophobia, and the overall attitude of stopping generational trauma. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly

I come back to this time and time again and keep finding something new. Sonically, this is innovative; lyrically, this is poignant--and any criticism I have is incredibly minor (such as the poem not really lasting throughout much of the second half, but the songs there very clearly do fit into the themes of the album).
