Ok we are finally getting to the good parts of her discography!
For a second album she already grew so much artistically, and believe it was really needed. Practically all the issues I originally had with Eyes Wide Open were fixed immediately with this project. The production, lyricism, all of it has improved drastically from Eyes Wide Open. And it is still shocks me how quickly she was able to improve in such a short amount of time between projects.
The album does lean towards a somewhat darker sound that going off of Eyes Wide Open can be a little jarring, but she really made this sound work for her so well. Her voice here is also top notch, it had this quintessential nasal-ness that mid point Sabrina had which I miss greatly!
She really matured so much as an artist in only a year and it’s so impressive to reflect this album era now because she really became an IT girl for Disney with this project, especially with the release of Thumbs. It is so impressive how she was so quickly able to salvage her career from fading away after that really rough debut album to make songs like On Purpose, aka one of her best songs she has ever released. Of course most people know this album for being the project with the certified smash hit, Thumbs, and while I do love that song there are so many great deep-cuts that just surpass it by a monumental level!
As she gains new fans through Short n' Sweet, I really get disappointed whenever they seem to not know her earlier work especially from this album because it really lifted her up from becoming another child star to failed popstar pipeline.
