Easy to think of VT as a continuation of the retro futurism of Stereolab and Broadcast but the differences stand out increasingly. For one thing, the drums are incredible, and the music forms around some imaginative rhythm patterns. 'Marbles' is a crazy ear worm, like 'Zuum' on the last album. Worth the very long wait. Traces of Midlake with a generous portion of moody 80s pastoralism. The Cure have been mentioned often, and 'Throne of Amber' does have a touch of 'A Forest'. The Cocteau Twins are in there too. 'Herstmonceux' captures the feel of 80s videos of bands in woolly jumpers in English countryside. Seems like an indication of a future route for Smith. Carries on excellent work with a few new elements—moogy Dungen-esque keys on 'Cinnamon' and almost cheerful 'I Think I Found a Way'. As usual it takes a few listens to reveal its charms but their albums are for the long haul.
