Kurt had such a knack for writing hooks — genuinely the Eminem of rock.
Total fucking classic. This album really grew on me a lot. Writing a review for one of the most popular and critically acclaimed albums ever made almost feels pointless, like everything that could be said has already been said a billion times before. But to keep it "short:" I love Kurt’s vocals. Even if they’re not the most technical in the world, they work perfectly here. The writing and lyricism are fantastic, and this is also some of the best production of the entire ’90s. That’s especially true on the more punk-leaning cuts like Territorial Pissings, Breed, and obviously Smells Like Teen Spirit, as well as Come As You Are, with its airy bass (correct me if I’m wrong) that I absolutely can’t get enough of. Every single hook and chorus on here is amazing — once again, Come As You Are (Memoria!), Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, and Breed are clear highlights.
I could seriously go into so much more detail, but everyone already knows what makes this album great. It’s Nevermind. More than deserving of a 10/10 in my opinion, one of the greatest albums of all time and easily Nirvana’s best. Also, Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, and Come As You Are are a major contender for the greatest three-song run of all time.
That said, I do get why some people aren’t into it. For a while, I thought it was a meager 7/10. For years I felt Kurt wasn’t a good vocalist at all — but like Bob Dylan, he has a style that just works, and once it clicks, it really clicks. I can easily overlook the lack of technicality now.
