I literally cannot listen to this album, I hate that I have this on vinyl
This album means so much to me. The whole theatricality of it combined with the excellent storytelling, it's perfect to me. The part that always gets me is on Sleep. During the heavy instrumentals you can hear a voice screaming "wake up", pleading for the patient not to give in to death. Once you hear it you can never unhear it.
All this to say I LOVE STORYTELLING IN ALBUMS!!
I particularly love the imagery used in this album. When I listen to The Deal or Bug Like an Angel I can just picture the entire scene, it always makes me emotional. As always, the dog themes in I'm Your Man did really well with me. Also, a Mitski album ending on a positive note? Unheard of.
PS. I blame this album (and the folk country version of I Don't Smoke she played at the concert) for getting me into americana.
I love the beginning and ending of this album (Geyser and Two Slow Dancers), but for me it just isn't as coherent as her other albums. I feel like some of the lyrics aged poorly, giving it this "I am 14 and this is deep vibe", though not as bad as on Laurel Hell. All in all, not her worst, definitely not her best.
