This project may have one of the best front-to-back flows in King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard's catalogue. I listened to it on a jog (Yes I listen to this band while I jog dont @ me) and it truly felt like I listened to one long song. This is largely due to how much of the album is linked by similar chord progressions, conventional jazz rhythms and wacky ass keyboards.
"Changes" was originally planned as the final album to be released in 2017 to finalize their five-album-in-one-year streak, but it ultimately got postponed for being incomplete. I'm glad it got delayed, because this feels like a lighter less chaotic sibling to "Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava" as they both share the same jam charm, progression, and R'n'B groove patterns accented by rock elements (particularly "Iron Lung"). "Changes" is much softer and feels like a nice cup of morning coffee :), but I think it's appropriate that they were released in the same month.
The opening song, "Change", grasps the listener right away with funky piano, and I found it interesting how the lead vocalist changes frequently. I was thrown off by voices that I had not recognized (I think it was Cook Craig and Joey Walker), which is funny since I've heard their entire discography. The song introduces the idea of changing, with lyrics that universally reflect the wisdom that comes with maturity but also the pain that comes with realizing your past truths can be wrong in some way. This theme lingers throughout the project with fun contexts such as "Hate Dancin'", which is about a narrator that dislikes dancing but slowly warms up to it! :> There's also darker contexts, such as "Gondii", which is about the changes that emerge from parasitic infection. 0.0
Anyways I'm still in my pajamas right now so I'm going to go CHANGE my clothes hahaha funny.
