This album was a huge improvement from their previous album. It was very sonically different from all the previous albums. While it was still a trip pop album, it had a lot of rock influence, as well as folk, and very experimental touches such as more since synthesizer based songs and more ambient elements. This was a very good album lyrically too, some of these songs had really good lyrics that really stuck with me. I really like ‘Small’, ‘Machine Gun’ and ‘Threads’. I don’t think the Portishead will release any more albums after this album, although it would be enjoyable to hear another album. But I feel like this album serves as an amazing closing album too, it really shows how much they matured in their 11 years of not releasing any new music and I feel like that is a really good thing that a band can collectively reach. I am very happy to have been listening to their entire discography.
