I never did hear this until recently because I just thought it would be like their other live albums that weren't that interesting to me. But once I looked at the tracklist for this album I became interested and it's much better than I ever would have guessed.
People think I'm nuts when I tell them that this is one of the great albums of the seventies. Not only that, it's one of the greatest rock albums of the 70s too. This seems amazing because within two or three years it would be all over for her, and she would become a very annoying mainstream pop singer. But she actually started out very strongly in 1971 and then came this album the next year. It has 10 unbelievably well-written songs on it, it has the cream of 1970s rock studio musicians ... read more
Well, there's two really good ones here that are pretty much in the same vein as their previous stuff. Those would be Someday Never Comes and Sweet Hitchhiker , both of which I like a lot. Then there's a couple that are about the equal of the lesser tracks on their better albums. One of them is an oldies remake that's about the equal of some of their other oldies remakes. So it's not a total disaster.
Even though this seems to be their album that people seem to think the most of, I think it's really disappointing after the two or three previous albums. Only two songs are up to the level of those other albums. Living Thng is fantastic, but it's the only one on the album that has the same melodic power and perfect arrangement of their best stuff. Most of the songs on this album just aren't very good and they really show ELO at their worst. There were more good ones on the next album, but they ... read more
The strings are starting to sound better on this album than the first album. There's more than just the cello that made every track sound like I Am the Walrus. They play better with the band this time. And the band itself plays a little harder and better. But only a couple of the songs themselves are good. But one or two of them show that his songwriting was improving. With a few more better written songs this might have been as good as the next couple albums. And Roll Over Beethoven is okay, ... read more
This is sort of an interesting start for them, and it's better than the second album, but things started to pick up with the third album. On their fourth album Eldorado they reached their peak. It was everything that this debut album promised but didn't achieve. They hadn't yet decided on which direction to go in , and only the tracks that hint at their future direction are really of any interest on this album.
There's one too many vocal tracks on here, but otherwise it's as great as their best stuff. On the other hand, one of the vocal tracks is my favorite thing here. And if you count Remember, with the Sandy Denny sample, as a vocal track, then there's 2 great vocal tracks.
When I heard that this was a band that played house music on guitars and live instruments, it sounded like just a crummy gimmick. I thought it would be just a guitar solo here and there over regular house music. But there's lots of different guitarss and they dominate the album. And almost every song is unusual and has something weird or unique about it. The vocals are totally different than what you would expect to hear in house music. No Divas screaming but instead ragged voiced male singers ... read more
Actually most of the tracks on here are just fine, which is why I really don't understand why people consider this to be a terrible orbital album. The only thing wrong with it is that it doesn't seem coherent or have a stylistic theme like most of their albums did. It's kind of a hodgepodge of all different stuff. But so what. And they are not repeating themselves here because almost everything on here is different than what they've done before.
This is their best simply because it's their wildest. Every track is loaded with big outrageous trippy psychedlic-style sounds and their beats are more gorgeous than ever. Only one track is less than spectacular and all the others are super-spectacular.
I'm probably the only person in the universe who thinks so, but I think this is their best album. For once all the tracks sound like they belong on the same album. There's a kind of consistency to it. Only two of the high points match the high points of their other albums, but overall there are more quality tracks on this than the earlier albums. And I count only one truly crummy one. And that's only because it sound like a rehash of Moaner from Beaucoup Fish.
Each album they made after homework was about only half as good as the previous album. About half of discovery is as good as homework, but too much of it is just too obsessed with nostalgia and campy retro. Which wouldn't be a problem if only those tracks were as good as the house tunes. This would get even worse on the next album Human After All, which was only about half as good as discovery. But I must say that I've come to like it more over time. And then by time they got to Random Access ... read more
When this came out a lot of people said that it was all just unreleased material that he had piled up. I never did find out if that was true or not, but I can see how it might be true because almost everything here sounds like it comes from one of those earlier albums. But there are a few that sound like something he hasn't done before. Either way, its still pretty good.
This would have been a perfect album were it not for D'yer Mak'er. It's amusing in a way, but for some reason it's the one song I never want to listen to. However I do like The Crunge, which is the song that most people think is the only stinker on the album.
With the exception of Nights in White Satin, this is a better album than Days of Future Past. Ride My Seesaw, Voices in the Sky, Legend of a Mind and The Actor are some of the best things that ever did. And there's even more here.
I'm baffled at why so many fans seem to think this is their worst album. It was their best in years I think. Especially after the awful horrible Four Calendar Cafe. And the good ones on this album are better than the good ones on Heaven or Las Vegas.
It's unbelievable how he could take so many tracks based on one single idea and make them all so fantastic. The music gets right under your skin in a way I've never really heard before. And I mean it literally feels like it's going under your skin and crawling around. This is one of the coolest electronic albums ever
I love this not just because I like the music but because they seemed to be the only ones who knew that the only way for adults to do this kind of music is with a sense of humor and a kind of love for the silliness of this type of music. I was surprised to find how seriously a lot of young people took this band. Which of course ruins all the fun. Because this band was all about fun as far as I'm concerned. But I actually like October Rust better than this one
The only one of all his albums that supposedly were comeback albums that I like. In fact, it's his only album of the 80s or 90s then I'd ever want to hear again. It's not perfect, but it's the only thing that even comes close to his 70s albums. But it's way too long. And unfortunately the single from this album Hearts Filthy Lesson is NOT one of the good tracks on the album. It's one of about five or six that the album would be better without.
