I will never condemn a band for making music. Cage the Elephant can do what they want. But... I don't really know what they were doing before or after this album. They have an alright discography but "Melophobia" blows the rest of their work out of the water. This is a melting pot of genres and it's here Shultz really shines as a songwriter, in my opinion. "Come a Little Closer" isn't the best song on the album or anything, but the fact that he wrote it while watching ants ... read more
It's no "Soviet Kitsch." We'll get that out of the way now.
While "Begin to Hope" does have some pop ballads that I could go without, this is still a really solid album. You can definitely tell that this is her first album that she worked on with a label, but at the same time the Spektor that recorded "Soviet Kitsch" is still very much alive on this record. Sadly, although this is a good listen, I feel like there's not much to write about? Bizarrely, the most ... read more
To be fair, this record doesn't do as much for me as it does for others, I don't think. There are songs I don't like on it that people seem to, and overall I don't find myself revisiting this album very often. This was kind of a gateway for me, in my musical fandom there's like a point for me that comes before and comes after I first listened to this album, and specifically the song "The Ballad of the ... read more
Ridiculously good songwriting for a 17 year old here and the most pertinent of the numbered albums by far. "3" is a really important album in Car Seat Headrest's discography, not only because of it's direct ties to "Twin Fantasy" but because this really feels like it's where Will Toledo started to become Will Toledo. The production can hurt sometimes and there's some low points, but I really really like this album. "beach funeral" specifically is just so... I don't ... read more
Regina Spektor is my favorite musician. Point blank. The first album I listened to from her is her best: "Soviet Kitsch." I think that album is perfect.
"Begin to Hope," her next album, wasn't so perfect. It was still good. It's REALLY good. But it's no "Soviet Kitsch," and it was lacking the creative energy that Spektor brought to the table with that album.
Is "Far" as good as "Soviet Kitsch?" Nope. Is it a worthy follow up? Yeah. It ... read more
