Johnny Cash - Johnny Cash at San Quentin
92

i love that he sings 'san quentin' twice. the editing on this one is kind of insane (not just the bleeps, but hard cuts left and right. this thing has been chopped and screwed every which way) but despite all that, it is a truly great live album.

The Band - Live at Watkins Glen
74

what a bizarre album. as others have pointed out, this isn't really what it's claiming to be. only two of the tracks here were recorded at watkins glen. some of these tracks aren't even live to begin with, with fake crowd noise plastered on top of them. there's even chatter dubbed in between songs that sounds like it does not fit in with anything else going on. canned thunder noises. this album is like musical fanfiction. a frankenstein's monster of an album. it's ... read more

Astrud Gilberto - Beach Samba
68

most of this album is a pretty pleasant samba album from the late 60s. astrud gilberto's voice is iconic and the album, for the most part, is really calming and chill.

there are two big exceptions to this: one is 'a banda (parade)' which is an old fashioned marching band song??? and sounds like a song more fit for the soundtrack of the musical, 'the music man' than a samba album. the second exception is a bizarre cover of the lovin' spoonful's 'you ... read more

Allan Sherman - My Son, The Nut
51

it's a comedy album from 1963. it's a bit dated in terms of humor and references. it's got a laugh track despite it not being a live album. sherman is a bit charming in his delivery and feels folksy but i don't know if the unpolished approach makes this album more accessible or less. it got a few smiles out of me, but otherwise, this is an album that is pretty forgettable, minus the big song off of it (which i could take or leave to begin with).

The Nude Party - The Nude Party
89

a surprisingly fun and energetic album. the nude party's sound seems to me to be very seeds-meets-yardbirds-meets-flying-burrito-brothers and lives and dies by being referential to the sound of years past. i think it provides a modern enough take on the classic 60's inspired sound and is definitely, as their band name suggests, a party at times. you'll be a fan of this album if you're a fan of vietnam war-era garage rock.

Stevie Wonder - Recorded Live: The 12 Year Old Genius
79

a pretty decent album here from a 12-year-old stevie wonder. obviously, it is nowhere near the heights that he would eventually reach a relatively short amount of time later, but even from this recording, you can tell the talent is there. the energy is pretty high and the band accompanying him holds it down well.

the marketing of stevie's career at this point is very referential to ray charles ("genius" used very intentionally in the album title) and this album does play very ... read more

Andy Williams - Days of Wine and Roses
77

a surprisingly decent early 60's pop album. andy williams has a great singing voice and the arrangements here definitely suit it and put it front and center. i preferred the more up-tempo numbers to the ballads here, but the highlight for me was the hit, 'can't get used to losing you.'

Booker T. & The M.G.'s - McLemore Avenue
81

a pretty fun album with great musicianship. it's an interesting take on the Beatles' classic, but overall, it feels a bit inessential and more of an oddity because it is a mostly instrumental cover album of tracks from an ultimately better album.

John Prine - Souvenirs
75

honestly a pretty great tracklist for a compilation of john prine's music, but i pretty much think all of the original recordings are better and more compelling.

USA for Africa - We Are the World
79

fairly inoffensive record. if you can stomach the title track and "tears are not enough" there's some pretty decent deeper cuts here from various artists. for me, the highlights were the bruce springsteen, pointer sisters, and tina turner tracks here but i truly don't think there is anything unlistenable (and yes, i think the charity tracks are fine too. a bit pompous, obnoxious, and cliche, but not as bad as people make them out to be).

The Hassles - The Hassles
70

maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but i found this one pretty interesting. obviously, starting from the top, it's notable because of one member who went on to do other things (deny starting fires, not being able to afford to buy pearls, etc.) but despite the album cover looking like a long lost album by the Association, the sound of this record is more somewhere on the spectrum between The Rascals and Vanilla Fudge - basically a psychedelic-tinged blue-eyed soul record. often times, it swings ... read more

Attila - Attila
80

am i listening to the same album as everyone else? the worst album of all time? what? i genuinely do not know what anyone is talking about. i've never listened to this album before this listen, but have always heard about it like it is the world's worst album, an affront to music.

to my surprise, it's a really fun, extremely listenable, hard psych album. billy's organ soars and drummer jon small's drumming is great! it's even a bit jazzy at times. the lyrics leave a little to be desired, but ... read more
