Dugui HG - The High School Tape
76

I see a lot of potential here. Unfortunately, Dugui HG's debut album falls short in some aspects. The production is great and resembles that of Kanye's "The College Dropout" and "Late Registration" but the lyricism and overall quality of the vocals is just not there. It's very obvious that there wasn't a very big budget for this album and because of that, the microphone quality is subpar. I also very much doubt that any of the samples used were cleared ... read more

5 years for nothing

Crush was pretty good tho

Update: album low-key grew on me

Lil' Sko - U Know Tha Sko
86

U Know Tha Sko, although a shorter album, is much more than what it appears as at first glance. Every single track is solid and deserves to be in here. This is also an amazing album considering that it was Lil' Sko's debut.

The actual music is similar to that of Koopsta Knicca's album Da Devil's Playground where it has a very slow and melodic feel but could 100% hold up in today's hip-hop world. In fact, it has as in the form of a sample on Da Devil's Playgoud ... read more

OMA - Bread 'n' Butter

Although just a cover album, this was an extremely enjoyable experience that was executed almost to perfection. Every track was a great recreation of the original which was played by an actual band. Honestly, I can’t wait to see what else they cook up in the future.

Nettspend - BAD ASS F*CKING KID
48

When the beat is ass, the melody is ass, the 808s are ass, and then Nettspend starts rapping.

Mickey Diamond & Ral Duke - Oroku Saki
76

Although the cover is very clearly inspired by the MM..FOOD cover, it’s less of an MF DOOM tribute and more like it’s attempting to update the MF DOOM sound and having a hard time doing that. I’m not saving that it’s bad, I just felt like it could have been a little bit better, especially when comparing itself to MM..FOOD directly with an album cover like that. Each track flows well with each other and transitions well, honestly feeling like a 22 minute single. The ... read more

TV Girl - Fauxllennium
78

This is a pretty solid album production wise and was pretty enjoyable throughout. I felt like it had a nice bouncy feeling to it that I could just grove out to. The sampling that TV Girl is known to use was present throughout the album and complimented everything else wonderfully.

Tracks that stuck out:
-Butterflies: Very upbeat and the production on it is amazing. Jordana’s vocals added so much more to track aswell, making it my personal favorite.
-The Sweet Life: It felt very different ... read more

ericdoa - why suffer for us?

Meh. It wasn’t a bad EP by any stretch, it honestly more just wasn’t my thing although it did have its ups. It had some parts that where it was very bouncy and that I actually did enjoy. That being said, it could have been better. The lyrics could have been enunciated upon a lot more than they were and I feel like it just felt lazy.

Tracks that stood out:
-search & destroy: One of the best tracks in the EP and was very bouncy and had a great energy to it.
-throw it up: The ... read more

jschlatt - A Very 1999 Christmas
86

Overall, it’s a fun little album which you could tell Schlatt had a lot of fun making. The music itself is amazing and his vocals complement the originals very well. It’s exactly what you expect from an album like this too, a collection of Christmas songs that was covered by a YouTuber.

samlrc - A Lonely Sinner
98

Wow, I mean wow. I was honestly not expecting much going into it but I was pleasantly surprised. Everything mixes well, each song flows into another, and the guitars just pull everything together. Every song starts off slow and slowly gets better and builds up to the end and before you know it, you’re listening to the next track. Honestly, I can’t really say much more about this album put it is almost perfect and when times that it isn’t, I can understand why the artist made ... read more

Discoholic - Welcome to Discopolis!
76

This is just a short EP that was just padded out by remixes and instrumentals. Honestly had a nice feel to it and I found myself enjoying the three actual tracks and activity getting into the grove of them.

Tracks that stood out:
-Discopolis (and remix): Really groovy and the best track on the short album. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for the remix as it doesn’t have that same funky feeling to it.

Overall, not a bad album although the remix dragged it down a bit. It could ... read more

JPEGMAFIA - I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU
94

I was one of the first people to listen to this album when it released at midnight and I was pleasantly surprised while listening to it. I feel like it’s less experimental than some of his other projects but also profits from that. The album starts off very high energy and slowly becomes more relaxed but still has that excited energy to the end.

Tracks that stood stood out:
-don’t rely on other men: The first song in the album that came out as a single with a music video as well ... read more

I remember the chaotic rollout this album had when it was first released. It being delayed, Kanye posting Hentai on his Instagram story, it taking days to get onto Spotify. My first ever listen to this album was on a car ride and I honestly enjoyed it for what it is but was also disappointed because it was so far removed from Kanye’s style and just sounded like another basic uninspired Hip-Hop album (which it is). Mixing is all over the place, and it’s embarrassing when you pull out ... read more

Hex Girlfriend - No Golf Cart Parking

This doesn’t feel like an EP but instead a bunch of singles that were thrown together and released together. Each song is very different and from one going into the next, it feels very jarring. The melodies and beats felt very repetitive at points. I did enjoy the vocals on each track and felt that the rest of the song dragged them down.

Tracks that stood out:
-As We Sleep: The beat was very repetitive, but I really enjoyed the vocals, feeling that it made up for the rest of the ... read more

$uicideboy$ - New World Depression
43

It feels like a very poor copy of 1990s Memphis rap that was made by two white guys. I enjoyed the album when it was just rapping but once they started singing, it just lost my interest immediately. Only times I feel where the album was good was when it went back to the original roots of the music they’re poorly copying.

Tracks that stood out:
-The Thin Grey Line: Reminds me of actual Memphis rap. The flows are in point and the beat is the icing on top.
-Us Vs. Them: I just got used to ... read more

cr1tter - the pain i feel
77

Personally, I had never heard of this artist before but decided to give it a listen and was pleasantly surprised. The production was solid throughout and the vocal mixing was also pretty solid. The lyrics themselves feel kinda depressing just to be depressing through which kinda drags my opinion down although this could be a result of me never really listening to this genre before.

Tracks that stood out to me:
-do u wanna die: I didn’t really like the additional adlibs that I felt were ... read more

Freddie Dredd - Cease & Disintegrate
84

One of the few Freddie albums that I’m able to listen to all the way through without falling asleep to. Wish it could be longer and he could expand upon the songs a little bit more but the production was solid. Lyrics are what you expect from Freddie Dredd, overly edgy. For a Doomshop album, it isn’t half bad and I’m glad it deviated from his earlier $uicideboy$ sound.

Tracks that stand out:
-USELESS: Fast paced and a great start to the album although I wished it contained ... read more

Tyler, The Creator - CHROMAKOPIA
95

Crazy solid album and the first of Tyler’s that I’ve listened to in its entirety. Every song mixes well with each other, going from intense and hyped up to slow and emotional, both of which tell us more about who Tyler is as a person. The samples from his mother (?) that play on throughout the album give it so much more character and helps with what the album is trying to get to the listener. My favorite detail from the album is the small voice, that I assume is Tyler’s voice ... read more
