On the surface, you'd expect this record to suffer from many of the problems of Janet's first two releases- in-your-face 80s production out the wazoo with cheesy lyric after cheesy lyric. However, what puts this album on a completely other planet than those first efforts is, funnily enough, its namesake- this is the record where Janet truly took control over her sound, and the results are nothing short of absolutely incredible. The production is still absolutely unfalteringly '80s' for every second of the runtime, but this time around Janet takes the reins over the lyricism and themes in a way that's immediately so much more mature.
