There are swaths of this live recording that feel nearly indistinguishable from a Mothers studio release- a testament to group + Zappa’s sheer mastery over their freak-jazz sound, especially in the live arena. But then, many of the little introductions from Zappa that prelude these cuts give a wonderful insight into the man’s storytelling, a component of the iconoclast’s identity at the very core. Not your typical live release, i.e. the exact type of live release you’d hope for from these loons
