...yea I don't know if it's worth writing a full review of this, at least not in the way I usually do. It's not really about the EP itself here, but rather the message, as the band wanted to protest the horrible response to climate change, covid, wealth inequality, and government corruption by way of their music. To that end, 'Eutopia' is a rousing success, making their points very efficiently by way of narrations from leading experts in their fields; Costa Rican diplomat and climate activist Christiana Figueres (on "#CLIMATEEMERGENCY"), French economist Gabriel Zucman (on "#TAXHAVENS"), and British economist Guy Standing (on "#UNIVERSALBASICINCOME"), with each tracks also given musical vocal support from Algiers, Saul Williams and Young Fathers, respectively.
I guess my point is that the messages are good, they're delivered by people who know what they're talking about and how to articulate them, and there's some cool instrumentals provided to back them up... but it's also not particularly great listening, especially as the narration obviously takes precedence which ends up swallowing up the music, while the music often ends up distracting from the narration. It's messy, which is a damn shame, but I respect and agree with what the band is trying to achieve here. My understanding is that their next EP which will release later this year will be their attempt to chime in on the war in Gaza, which is an important subject to discuss that I know they've been vocal about even before the war broke out, but I hope it's a bit more... musical than this, if that makes sense.
