Sadly just not the biggest gothic rock person. While sonically it sounds pretty good, that's about the nicest thing I can say about this album. I could also not understand basically any of the lyrics to this album make of that what you will.
This is a very confusing record to rate. If you were to put it in sports term I would call this a very "top-heavy roster." It's cultural staying power is undeniable, the hits are as big as they can get and i remember them all well and fondly for the most part (firework and ET less so). On the other hand mixed in between is some of the worst 2010's pop-drivel I've ever heard. Like Circle the Drain is so hilariously on the nose it's hard to take it seriously at all, ... read more
I find it very hard to rate this album. Not because I don't think it's good, that much is undeniable, but it's a bit of a mixed bag. This is easily Frank at his best, almost all of his most poignant and emotionally charged songs on this album, without them I don't think his legacy is even half of what it is today. On the other hand, there are a lot, and I mean a lot, of songs that I consider to be like transitionary/interludy/not really full-fledged songs in between all of ... read more
Feels even more toothless than their last record and even more of a shameless ripoff. Sure there are some songs that I like but half the time it felt like someone put a metronome in the room they were recording and told them that they'd die if they dared go above a certain speed.
Yeah this album is just that good. A part of me questions if I like it even more than Blonde (though ultimately Frank’s most poignant songs are on that album imo). Even still this album is wonderfully produced, has a great variety in songs and conceptually with the interludes in between it really does feel like surfing channels.
This song is pretty inoffensive but sounds more like a joke or some bit than anything. It's 2 minutes long and 30 seconds of it is spent on a super weak drop that lasts about a total of 2 seconds. It's not doing itself any favours lyrically (though I wasn't too keen on the lyrics of many songs on Brat anyways), but this is just plain lazy. I mean it's not that hard to combine rock and electronic music, just look at Underscores, who did it best in my mind with albums like ... read more
I never was really into American Football like that other than a couple songs off of their first album and Comfortably Numb, and it is safe to say I'm still not into them.
Never listened to the Foo Fighters like that, but this is a perfectly serviceable rock album. Oddly enough I feel like the production is kind of subpar and as a result is holding the album back a bit, but I also just think there aren’t enough catchy songs on it.
This album lacks much of desperation, frenetic energy or pace that made me fall in love with their debut. Yet it still works, I still love it. They've seemingly traded much of that energy in for something more subdued, softer, more secure, which they've earned considering how great that first album was. Don't get me wrong, the songs on this album are still great, I continue to be so thoroughly impressed by a band like Friko. But I can't help but listen to this album missing ... read more
Sonically a very pleasing album, I have no complains about it. Yet for some reason this album never managed to come all the way together and provide me the sucker punch that makes me go "wow." I never really felt compelled to think this song is amazing or I want to listen to it again after this album. It just was, decent.
A brave album in the sense that it's unafraid to try new things and be loud and proud. Sadly none of the songs manage to grip my heart or my ear in terms of catchiness, ultimately falling short. And I also can't ignore the piss song, which I was expecting to have some cool beat drop, or have the story make some interesting turn. Nope, she just pisses in a jar, that's the story. It's as awkward and as unnecessary as it sounds.
I wouldn't call this album as good as That! Feels Good! (which is my favourite Jessie Ware album), but I certainly think it's better than What's Your Pleasure. I was skeptical of this album at first, a little concerned that it was tapering off after a strong start (I loved both I Could Get Used To This and Automatic as singles). Luckily though, the album does manage to round itself back in shape starting at Love You For, creating a fantastic backhalf after a bit of a lull in the ... read more
