Holy fuck this is great.
I'm not the biggest fan of screamo/yell rap/yelling vocals. So I'm not the biggest fan of some of the songs on this album. Even with that being said, the actual content within the lyrics is amazing for the most part (liar and everything i love are little lacking in unique and interesting lyrical content compared to the rest of the songs imo). I was a fan of Lil Darkie back in middle and early high school. I grew out of his more "controversial" style of music, but never really became someone who hated his music. I did start to listen less and less around the time he dropped SWAMP and pretty much stopped listening entirely after Boros. His music just felt very lacking in comparison to his earlier output. It felt like he was just saying controversial stuff to say it and not because he actually felt like he was saying something worth saying.
While I don't agree with some of his opinions that I used it (if he even holds some of those opinions anymore) I would never say his earlier stuff was "just controversial for controversy sake" (for the most part). I actually listened to MONEY POWER FAME as the MV popped up in my recommended, but besides listening to this album now, that was the last time I had listened to his music (and I really liked MPF).
This album is very emotionally heavy and has some obvious inspiration from Childish Gambino's album '"Awaken, My Love!"' (especially noticeable in the song "wake up" sounding extremely similar to "Redbone"). I honestly think this switch-up in style (which Darkie has been moving towards for a while now) was a very nice breath of fresh air in his output. The growth put on display with this album is amazing and I hope moving forward he continues to make great music.
