Todd Rundgren really wanted to shift Utopia’s direction with with this album by going for a more accessible, hard rock pop sound. The band kept some of their prog rock elements, but leaned more into straightforward rock with traditional drumming and sleek production, aiming for a radio-friendly vibe.
However, this change in style didn’t quite land. The attempt at a polished, pop rock sound feels forced, and it lacks the more organic, experimental side that made Utopia interesting before. It’s clear they were aiming for hits, but it just didn’t come together, and that’s probably why the album didn’t perform well.
