This is Horrorcore of the highest order and the best album I've heard so far this year. The beats and instrumentals creep instead of, funnily enough, jumpscare. A perfect juxtaposition to the songwriting.
Woods' talent for evoking such vivid imagery is on full display here. It's haunting, disturbing, immediate, and a wonder to listen to.
Cole Haden lays himself completely bare on this new project while the band continues to push forward their unique sound.
Another especially beautiful release from Mr. Vernon. Dude's building one helluva discog.
Deafheaven hasn't offered this kind of intensity for a long while. It's awesome.
The charm and eccentricity of BC,NR remains strong on Forever Howlong.
It uses the alt rock sounds I grew up listening to with such artistic flare that I couldn't help being satisfied track after track.
Awesome MBV cover to close it all out too.
It's been a joy to witness the influence of the Windmill scene; and while you could argue that this project is derivative of that scene, it doesn't make it any less enjoyable. Also hearing some influence from Sprain's "The Lamb as Effigy". Especially the vocals.
Wow. I need to listen to this thing again. And again. Then probably again.
Considering I was not on the Ethel Cain bandwagon after "The Preacher's Daughter", Cain has managed to subvert my expectations and deliver an incredibly moody, atmospheric and moving ambient/drone/slowcore record. I'm actually kinda in shock at how fantastic this project is.
A very solid singer songwriter record from the usually bonkers Cameron Winter. He's toned it back on the theatrics while still highlighting what makes his vocal chops special.
Like on "An Overview on Phenomenal Nature", Jenkins lack of vocal dynamism (albeit very pretty) holds the project back a little bit. But like on her previous project, it's the stunning compositions and production that make it soar.
Robert Smith and co. make a helluva come back. This is their best material since Disintegration. Was not expecting this kind of quality. To say I'm pleasantly surprised is an understatement.
While the record slowly morphs into a heavy, angry and haunting sound, the first leg subverted my expectations. It offers consolation and consolation only. It's a beautiful touch when considering the subject matter. Another great release by the Godspeed.
--EDIT-- WTF! On side D of the Vinyl is a 13 minute, completely unreleased track that comes after GREY RUBBLE - GREEN SHOOTS. It's quite a haunting elegy. It uses the melody of GREEN SHOOTS to create a noisy ambient drone that fits ... read more
As wild and playful an instrumental palette as I was expecting. It's the kind of art and prog rock that is important artists keep alive; but It's Geordie's songwriting that really elevates this thing. It's head-scratching, at times touching, and entertaining as ever.
--Edit-- Goerdie Greep gives us another reason to buy physical media. On the vinyl, there are instrumental sections at the end of The Magician and If You Are But A Dream that have not been released on the ... read more
While still digesting the absolute banger fest that is Cascade, I decided to give this album listen. Not sure if Cascade got me warmed up properly for this or what, but this hit me immediately. The sheer ambition on some of these tracks is quite impressive. The production, instrumentation and use of samples on the project is varied and playful; along with some great features. Just another great record in 2024.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Magdalena Bay present Imaginal Disk.
--EDIT-- After a few more days a fully immersing myself in the album, and fully comprehending the concept and narrative of the album, I have no more minuscule gripes. This is an immaculate, stunning, gorgeous piece of work that I think will be one of the defining projects of the decade.
