Starts at strong but definitely peters out towards the end. BOILED PEANUTS followed by DENIAL IS A RIVER is just tooooo strong and it's so near the beginning it's hard to keep up after that. I love this album! Totally brought FJM back into my life after not really enjoying his recent output. I will say I worry that maybe the reason this sounds SO good is because his last few albums haven't been as great? Maybe if it were a follow-up to Pure Comedy it wouldn't be quite so special. I love this album, another top album of 2024 for me. I was not familiar with Hamish Hawk before listening to this but instantly fell in love. Really love the style of his lyrcisim, very funny and witty and gay. Really love the tone of his voice, it felt very akin to Perfume Genius and John Grant (maybe because they are all gay men...). Probably my favourite album of 2024. Loved the story it told, so much better than anything by Black Midi to me (maybe because the fans ruined black midi for me idk). It held the perfect balance between the more serious tones of Schlagenheim and the outrageous and/or comedic parts of the more recent Black Midi albums.
