i don't fucking know. okay. awful lyrics and subpar music from people who have the capacity to be incredibly talented (What fucking HAPPENED with the Black Hit Of Space. i THOUGHT you, Martyn and Ian, are the people. that made. EMPIRE STATE HUMAN and BEING BOILED!!)
A far too long mess that never actually wants to cross any lines into being any good. It is the only time where in recent memory I had to listen to an album in two days. This is something they were ahead of actually- see most ... read more
By all accounts Naked should just be an underproduced undercooked album made by a bunch of amateurs, and yet, it's absolutely brilliant. I'm very surprised that, at the time of writing, there is only one other user review here.
Each song on this album has its own unique sound (except for maybe Love Lasts Forever and Mr Blunt those are kinda similar) due to the band having seven members and at least four producers, but the album doesn't sound unfocused despite that. I think the ... read more
This album's pretty good! I'm kinda curious if the album had a hard time releasing because, while I believe that it was released in 1985 it doesn't sound like it was recorded in the mid-80s. Sounds a lot more like 1983? Anyway yeah I like it.
Wayne Kennedy has a very nice singing voice and a pretty supple range. Red Movies is sung very sweetly. "Erase The Memory" is, to me, trying to emulate Phil Oakey's shouty style of singing along with the hefty "Ohs" ... read more
It's a shame that this album isn't the one that contained "Let's All Make A Bomb" because oh man is this one. I believe Heaven 17 are great at arrangement, but not necessarily composition. I really don't know how to describe How Men Are... 1984 was a weird year for new wave I think.
"This Is Mine" is a weird single. "Sunset Now" and "Reputation" are just rehashes of the previous album's amazing "Key To The World". ... read more
I think they could have gotten away with the first track being a non-album single, as they had a lot of those going around at the time. But it's a really good introduction if you hadn't heard the band before. It's amazing how quickly Ian and Martyn were able to make BEF/H17 after departing from Human League because unlike later albums these songs do not sound rushed at all. The producing too, they really understand how to use reverb and percussion. The lyrics are also quite ... read more
I once listened to it 7 times in a row during a road trip and then like a week later the car got stolen. Really good. I think Bernard and Jake have way too similar voices though it's kinda trippy. Definitely an album worthy of more recognition from the greater New Order base, both official and fandom.
Highlight tracks: Sink or Swim, This is Home, Poisonous Intent, Runaway
Weaker tracks: Dynamo, These Changes, Walk On Silver Water
It's a lot more boring than people say. Nowhere near a bad album, just insanely overrated. I don't think Martin Hannett's production has aged well at all, even if it sounds like nothing else of the era. Still definitely worth listening to as a casual music fan, it is something undeniably important to history... just... also listen to Closer too so you know this band at their real peak.
Highlight tracks: Insight, Shadowplay, Wilderness, Interzone
