Revisiting this has been awesome, totally swept up in a James Blake phase right now.
Moments of brilliance but ultimately pretty underwhelmed. Their last two albums have been such staples in my rotation because of their takes on a sound that is so near and dear to my heart. These songs end up feeling much more generic than those on the previous two.
The reception of this album is pretty strange to me in a few ways. Number one, the discourse around his triplet flow is definitely not accurate. Like, triplet flow is different than the flow he’s doing a lot of the time on the album, given he is doing a lot of triplet flow, but still, it’s not like he hasn’t done it before. Watching the documentary made me appreciate this album so much more. The songs take time to grow compared to the other classics, but once they grow they fucking grow.
