aerokii - aerokii's skittle bag (archive)
65

Exploring rhythm games is always so much fun because you can end up finding some incredibly underrated musical work.
This album is one of those cases.

Aerokii's Skittle Bag (archive) is a collection of their songs, mostly atmosphere breakcore / DnB.

I absolutely love the mood of many of the tracks, feeling etheral and dreamy, but also dark and and moody.
Tracks like Existence and At The End Of Time really made me feel like I was floating in a supernova, with the universe expanding ... read more

goreshit - gnb
90

I have a problem with gnb.

The first time I decided to give it a look, I was prepared to listen to the usual goreshit track: a chaotic super high energy mess.
Yet, 10 seconds into Fine Night, I realized that was not the case.

This EP is really something magical. It almost feel like a time capsule to the early 2000's, CRT monitor included.
I wasn't alive at this time but somehow this album manages to give me a sense of nostalgia for a time I've never lived.

The best feature ... read more

Far Out - Origin
70

We're getting extra nostalgic with this one

I remember back in 2020 when I was listening to this, Nightcore version. I was so hyped.

Looking back, Origin isn't the greatest song: it's rather simple, monotonous in development and nothing new in the EDM landscape. And yet to my childhood self it was a crazy banger and a great way to spend time gazing at the sky imagining space battles and infinite adventures.

Even now, I can't stop coming back to this. I'm probably too ... read more

Throttle - Where U Are

"What an album!"
"What an album!"
"What an album!"
Chat has been disabled for 3 second(s)

Throttle's Where U Are is a jump in the past, a nostalgic journey in an era when everything was seemingly better.

This album is, quite frankly, simple.
The music isn't complicate to listen to. The melodies are straight forward, just like the chords and the structure. The lyrics are clear and meaningful.
And yet, it's a masterpiece that deserves at least one ... read more

Starjunk 95 - Industrial Sunset Memories
85

Banger after banger, Starjunk 95 proves himself again as the king of "songs I'd listen to while cruising in a supercar." Yeah, I know it's called rally house, but that's lame, isn't it?
Industrial Sunset Memories is his debut album and, even though the cover might not suggest it, this album goes hard: it's definitely more than just a simple soundtrack to some cool car moments; it's a work of music you can dance to and actively enjoy.
From the first track, ... read more

KMNZ - Moon Engine
70

WANTED carries this project so hard

I got into this single thinking I would've enjoyed the main single and probably skimmed over the remaining songs (that most times are inferior due to being shorter and generally side tracks) but oh boy if I was wrong.

While Moon Engine is clearly the song they put their focus on, I didn't like it too much. It's slightly too chaotic, both in it's composition and genres. The idea of mixing phonk, Eurobeat and hip-hop it's cool on ... read more

Neurosis - An Undying Love for a Burning World
70

I tried, really.

I listened to the album in its entirety, and then listened to a few songs on their own a few times, but I really struggled to get into it.

First I'd like to say that it's my first time listening to sludge metal. And that's probably part of the issue: I don't like this genre very much.
I'm a person that enjoys active listening, meaning music that you can just sit and listen to it on its own. An Undying Love for a Burning World is nothing like that: ... read more

Ditonellapiaga - Che fastidio!
90

Foreground Eclipse - Wishes Hidden In The Foreground Noises
89

Wishes Hidden In The Foreground Noises is the foundation of everything we love about Foreground Eclipse. It's their first full length album, but don't be mistaken: it's a gem.

The magic about this LP is being able to see the "FgE formula" taking shape: the meramipop and Teto duo.
In this album especially it was so innovative and special, their duality being something that has inspired touhou doujin bands since the release of this record.

Speaking about the music, ... read more

岸田教団&THE明星ロケッツ [Kisida Kyodan & The Akebosi Rockets] - STRIKE THE BLOOD
70

Created for the homonymous anime, STRIKE THE BLOOD is a short EP containing 2 singles and 2 instrumentals.

Honestly there isn't much to say about this album: it's the classic Kisida Koyudan sound, featuring the signature distorted guitars solo and the J-rock features; the bass is working overtime and the drums keep going relentlessly.

That said, it's still good work. It's extremely accessible (as many anime openings), punchy and compelling. In terms of "Anime ... read more

RAYE - WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!

Infected Mushroom - Spitfire (Stonebank Remix)
80

Turning psytrance into dubstep is no simple task, yet Stonebank managed to deliver.

Now, don't kill me, but I like this one more than the original. Not because it's much better, but because I'm not a fan of psytrance myself.
That being said, after listening to the original a few times, I feel like the remix captures well the intent and the mood of the song. It manages to feel similar and different at the same time: smiliar enough to resemble the original song but different ... read more

VANTAGE - 50//50
90

(For some god forsaken reason AOTY decided to delete my review as I was just finished, I'm gonna explode. I forgot what I said.)

50//50 is a future funk classic.

It's Vantage's most played song at 50m+ streams and arguably one of the biggest songs in the entire genre.

The track is heavily inspired by Heatwave's "Big Guns", which takes from Eric Clapton's "Layla". I must out a huge emphasis on *heavily inspired* as 50//50 is basically a 1:1 with ... read more

Mori Calliope - DISASTERPIECE
65

Disasterpiece honestly doesn't deserve ALL the hate, it's not that bad overall.

Knowing where she came from I'd say this album is insane improvement. We're still very far from the top but a future where we finally get a green rated album may not be that impossible anymore.

Speaking about the album overall, I could sum it up well with "I just wish Calli leaned more on the pop aspect": I enjoyed to some degree the mix between rap, pop and rock tracks but I ... read more

Zenpaku - Odyssey Cycle
70

I'm surprised this hasn't been reviewedbombed just for containing the name "Demondice", but considering this is an off-channel of an already relatively unknown producer it does make sense.

Zenpaku, an alias of Dj-jo released Odyssey Circle in march 2022. And honestly I feel like not even 10k people have listened to the album, because on YT Music the most played track has 1k plays, while most of the rest are in the low hundreds.

I liked the idea of the album being a ... read more

岸田教団&THE明星ロケッツ [Kisida Kyodan & The Akebosi Rockets] - .JP
80

Aight reimu how in the HELL are you holding that hamburger?? 0/10 Technique

Anyways, Kisida Koyudan & The Akebosi Rockets are here yet again to bless us with some great doujin, touhou-inspired j-rock.
They have been a household name when it comes to touhou remixes, and for good reason. They have been producing remixes and inspired songs since 2007 and became a big name in the doujin scene.
In 2012, when this EP got released, the band had plenty of success after releasing "HIGHSCHOOL ... read more

You know how people love selecting places that are perfect "bleed out spots"? Where meeting your tragic end wouldn't be so bad after all?

Well, yuyoyuppe's Solitude Freak is a perfect bleed out album. If I was on a lonely snowy landscape with a pair of headphones and my phone, slowly fading away, I would play ... read more

9Lana - プロポーズ [Propose]
96

Propose is one if those songs that once you've heard once you'll never be able to remove from your head. It happened that while listening to jpop I would go back listening to this just to bless my ears with perfection once more.
If I had to choose a song to make a J-pop hater, this would definitely be on the list.

Powerful vocals, insane vocal range, great arrangement. Going from a melancholic, almost whispered verse to a desperate scream almost gives me goosebumps.
The way 9lana ... read more

花冷え。 [HANABIE.] - HOT TOPIC
78

HOT TOPIC. 4 bangers and... one anime intro??

Let's address the elephant in the room: Hanabie-chan's theme. To be completely honest, the first time I listened to it I wasn't surprised. It's a Japanese doujin music classic to end on a silly note (for example, my beloved Foreground Eclipse do it often) and it's not Hanabie's first time doing this either on an EP.
Unfortunately this doesn't change my mind about the track being pretty underwhelming, with not much ... read more

Various Artists - FÜGENE 3
83

Fügene 3 is probably the most important album you've never heard of, and I'm not exaggerating.

I'll be taking a short detour to explain, so bear with me.

In 2017 Fügene 1 comes out. It's an experimental compilation, in which the artist tried to fuse UK Hardcore/Hardcore Techno beats and bpm with Future Bass melodies, synths and jazz sounds. This album was a success, and showed to the label (MEGAREX) that this type of sound was promising. It wasn't a genre ... read more
