SEX WE ARE GONNA HAVE A LOT OF SEX. MAN I LOVE SEX. I WANNA GO HOME GET IN BED AND HAVE SOME SEX - Sabrina Carpenter, probably
I have been eagerly following the career of Stacey Ryan since her collaboration with jazz trumpeter Jay Webb, who is a virtuoso on his instrument. Listening to her work with him and her covers of songs such as “Just the two of us” “Like someone in love” and “dancing queen” had me thinking this album would be a fuse of modern pop with jazz aesthetics and styles.

Probably the weakest of the three A Matter Of Time singles. Lyrics seem too modern, poppy, and don’t have the timeless appeal her previous songs have had. Despite that, her sad, yet confident vocals deliver an inspiring performance, but the lyrics leave much to be desired.
In Lover Girl, Laufey fuses Bossa Nova rhythms with the lyrical style of Frank Sinatra and other crooners of those days. Lyrics about big cities, skyscrapers, and vivid descriptions pull the listener in to almost a romantic and nostalgic era. The piano part seems as if she is being accompanied by a lively musician hacking away on his piano, a Basie to her Sinatra, if you will.
Laufey clearly understands her musical styles. Although a contrast from the other two singles, Silver Lining fits in perfectly with her discography. This song feels warm and intimate as if the listener is an a Café listening to a quartet playing standards, while being there with the one they love. The song is great at setting a tone. While she is singing about hell and sin, she sings it in a romantic way that makes the listener want to cuddle up next to someone they love.
Not a terrible album, but definitely underwhelming. The grand orchestra of horns, synth, reeds, and strings along with the sharp sensory percussion has been replaced by two people strumming guitars and straining into a mic. Pink Elephant was the highlight of the album. If they had one “stripped-down” song it would have been fine but the entire album just feels…sad. Not pained like Neon Bible, but sad.
