The Sugargliders - We're All Trying To Get There

Ah the Sugargliders were one of Melbourne's best indie pop bands back in the late 80s....swinging tunes with great pop edges.. Ahprahran is a lost gem of pop brilliance. I'd like to mention that my band Captain Cocoa gave them their first gig but that would only be bragging..

The Reels - Beautiful

A masterstroke from the Reels, Australia's own 80s quirky pop geniuses - this is an "ironic" easy-listening LP on the budget label K-Tel that gave them their biggest hit in Australia - (This guy's in love with you"). A mixture of schmalzy covers (from Burt Bacharach, Engelbert Humperdinck and even the Christian country star Jim Reeves (!) amongst others) and re-worked originals, the LP stands the test of time as a "beautiful" collection of melancholic but ... read more

The Bluebells - Sisters

A collection of great melodic pop songs from the Bluebells - never betraying their twee jangle pop origins and Scottish peers (Orange Juice, Aztec Camera, Altered Images), the Bluebell's songs have fantastic hooks, sort-of soulfull (such as I'm falling) and harmonica! You have probably all heard the hit Young at Heart, but the other songs deserve a listen, personal favs; Everybody's Somebody's Fool, I'm Falling, Will She Always be Waiting and Cath.

The Go-Betweens - Tallulah
NR

Often overlooked and criticised by the band themselves, Tallulah has some great songs - the very should-have-been pop hits Right Here and Bye Bye Pride. Of course, it is the addition of Amanda Brown on violin, vocals and oboe that brings this album to another level of melodic pop brilliance.. and it was their last album with the great Robert Vickers on bass..I saw them touring this album in Melbourne Australia in the 80s.. you'd never guess but they were great live.

Jens Lekman - Night Falls Over Kortedala
NR

Absolute "Pure schmaltzy joy" as the Plague Review wrote in their review. My favourite songs would be A Postcard to Nina and Shirin. The instrumentation is varied and really nice, as are Jens' dulcet tones.

My own list of twee jangle pop albums, heavily biaised towards the 80s (full disclosure I was in Australian twee jangle pop group Captain Cocoa)
