I was totally expecting that to be an absolute disaster, but it's actually pretty good. Obviously it's not actual Rock music.
Incredibly groovy and adventurous Free-Jazz that sounds absolutely gorgeous. Everyone has a lot of fun and plays their asses off (including the audio engineers, as the recording is excellent). This album really hits the sweet spot between other-wordlyness and beauty. Also Marshall's saxophone playing is simply astonishing, considering that he was 99 when this was recorded !
I want to be Marshall Allen when I grow up.
At this point Jeff Parker could probably record all his concerts, issue them all as live albums, and they would all be great.
Here Nicole Mitchell explores a more classic Jazz style, although it does sound very modern, and she doesn't hesitate to wander into outer space on occasion. Absolutely first class cast of players too. Amazing.
