NoMeansNo - Wrong

wrong is admittedly an album i've slept on despite hearing about its greatness. i dunno why. it's probably cuz sometimes i think i like post-hardcore less than i actually do; it's not the most enticing genre in the world to me, but every time i've checked out a post-hardcore band i think i'd like, i end up loving them. nomeansno at their heaviest sound similar to one of my favorite post-hardcore bands ROLLINS BAND, who i definitely gotta review here someday--and anything that sounds remotely like rollins band is good in my book. rob wright actually kinda sounds like henry rollins at times.

but enough about a band that came AFTER the one i'm reviewing: nomeansno are a much-beloved institution of canadian punk who'd been making waves since the early 80's. very much of the artsier persuasion, the musicianship on wrong is just on another level. it's technical, precise and incessantly kinetic...like, for example, rollins band or VERY early tool. this band has much more blazing punk energy than any of those ones, though, more rooted in hardcore. the music has an eccentric personality which definitely deserves a spot in the Quirky Punk Pantheon. they explore an array of emotional tones, with lyrically dense songs about human struggles positioned alongside fun, sarcastic bangers. it explores just as many different musical styles, and no matter how crazy it gets it always feels so organic. the whole thing is just super creative and unique, can't believe i slept on it for so long--i'd consider this essential post-hardcore!
