It's almost unbelievable that one person can be this good at every part of pop music at 23. Erin LeCount's writing here is shot through with near-dysphoric longing, her production sets the bustling, yet desolate scenes perfectly, and she somehow knows exactly how to sell all of it vocally. It took me one listen to remember every line on this thing.

Slapping a 9 on this - I found it through a YouTube Music mix and just thought it was so sweet and beautiful. The kids are going to be alright if they're making art like this.

Just a beautiful, instant classic pop song. Decades of history are present here, distilled down into their essence and shot through with the weary, messy emotion popstars only now have been allowed to fully feel publicly, and the outro here is one of *those* moments in pop music that feels like it's floated in the aether forever, just waiting for the right person to conjure it.

Just an absolute motherfucker of an album. After hearing this a few times, I listened back through the Deafheaven catalogue, and all of it sounded quite beautiful, but I still hit the typical brick wall I often hit with black metal, where the instrumentals are somewhat less transcendent and varied than they think they are and there are few lyrics to latch onto so I'm left bored by the overlong abstraction no matter how pretty it all is.

Lonely People With Power has none of those problems. ... read more

Every time I return to this, and I still do, I'm left in awe of how fucking bizarre this shit is. RAYE white-girl raps like Kesha, bathes in sleazy drug-addled paranoia like The Weeknd, girlbosses like Beyonce, lives in the moment like Miley Cyrus, holds up a microphone to the demonic voices in her head and in her cab, and makes a House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls for a new generation, and a new gender, except somehow it's even better this time. It has been a long, long time since ... read more
