TW: Mental Illness, Schizophrenia
This is something I've been avoiding for a while. I liked the singles a lot but the mixed reception of the whole record turned me off for a while, but with me cramming all the albums I missed this year it came back up on my radar. When I looked I saw Brad changed his review from a 30 to an 80, which is super rare for him and a HUGE upgrade in opinion, so I thought maybe I'll try it out.
This album is hard to really rate because even though some of the instrumentals aren't for me, the lyrics are by far the best of the entire discography of the band. I've been personally going through a lot of personal mental turmoil and Clancy vocalizes a lot of what I've been feeling. Schizophrenia runs in my family, and no matter how much I try to ignore it, it keeps coming back in the forefront of my life. I've been experiencing very alarming early onset symptoms that are known to lead to a psychotic break. While it's not what the albums about, Clancy talks a lot about the feeling of hitting a breaking point. The regression in a mental status that you've been working to fix for a long time, but is easily be toppled by one small thing. A lot of what this album talks about is very relatable to me and makes me very emotional to listen to. What tøp did here was surprisingly personal to me and was an incredible listen. The lyrics were so well done that I honestly am not even worried about the underwhelming instrumentals, but it is the weak point of the album. Some of them are either a bit too over or underproduced, or just a bit boring. With that being said, they fit the vocals and lyrics pretty perfectly overall.
