ずっと真夜中でいいのに。 [ZUTOMAYO] - 潜潜話 [Hisohiso Banashi]
89

This is a great staple. It has some serious highs and lows though. 5/7 songs range from literally bangers to pretty great whilst the rest is around the "good but not special" territory. Overall the blend of rock, funk and jazz into one melodic cacophony is greatly appreciated. This is one of the better modern J-Rock albums I've heard.

Weezer - Weezer (Blue Album)
96

My first rock album... it's just very very very good. Simple, clean, real and it sounds supreme. Weezer in the 90's really were unstoppable. Songs like "Say It Ain't So", "Undone" and" The World Has Turned And Left Me Here" stand out for their blend of incredible simple/vibe-y instrumentals with emotional themes that are almost inherent of this genre.

椎名林檎 [Ringo Sheena] - 勝訴ストリップ [Winning Strip]
83

This album is very noisy, all over the place and extremely chaotic in general. But that's a good thing in J-Rock, it's the basis and foundation of it. Though this album doesn't necessarily present any transcendent bangers for me, it is certainly colourful, vivid and alive, enough so to be a staple in Ringo's discography.

Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly
87

I don't know what Fantano said, nor what any distinguished critic did. From an objectivist perspective I guess I can see why people praise this so much. Heavily loaded, meaningful and personal lyrics, political/cultural theme that rallies masses, beautiful instrumentals, supreme mixing and production etc. and if I am to judge it musically as well as poetically it would be a justly high rating. Nevertheless I still do not think it reaches the level hype that it does due to its musicality so ... read more

福居良 [Ryo Fukui] - Scenery
93

My introduction into jazz and I wouldn't have it any other way. Japanese jazz and fusion is in general very vibrant and colourful but this album is a beautiful melancholy with stellar trio work that gives fast swinging grooves as well as slow melodic pieces. Incredibly well balanced and instrumentally satsfying overall although perhaps it is just a little too long for me (Early Summer is great though, unparalleled vibe).

Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
92

The best Arctic Monkeys album no doubt. While the following have been good, such track consistency can hardly be replicated. No long review needed here, just mentioning that the band makes perfect use of all the instruments to create what to me is the ultimate stage of garage rock in all its shades.

King Gnu - Sympa
98

THIS is undoubtedly my favourite album atm. Nothing is quite like King Gnu in their way of sounding jazzy, funky, rocky and classical-y whenever they feel like and sometimes all together. This album is executed masterfully with almost no misses (The hole was the only low point for me unfortunately) and spectacular instrumentation all throughout. Seiji’s vocals and Daiki’s work on guitar never cease to amaze me, but the overall arrangement of sounds is incredibly vast, so much so ... read more

ヨルシカ [Yorushika] - 二人称 [second person]
89

Overall it is a beautiful album that tells a story in different keys. It’s very introspective and reflective which is almost an inherent feature of ヨルシカ at this point but what makes it an engaging listen despite a considerable length, is not solely n-buna’s instrumental genius, but the positioning of it. I may have rated some songs unfairly low when contrasted with the quality of their make, however that was mostly due to my personal preference which is why overall this ... read more

King Gnu - Ceremony
89

This is one of my favourites, running purely off the absolute bangers present in here (yes it does fall significantly shorter as an album, but c'mon, listen to Hakujitsu). Mass-oriented indeed, but brilliant nonetheless (why do you think it's their best performing as well as platinum?) and composed by THE Daiki Tsuneta, brilliant guitarist who makes the instrument sound like it hasn't ever before. Highs and lows here and there which prevents me from putting this into the 95+ zone ... read more

Mac Miller - Swimming
90

Swimming - Mac Miller 9/10 (But if it aligns emotionally, can easily scale to 10/10)

Come Back to Earth: 9.7/10 - A stellar way to begin an album, despite not being my type of music it is objectively very well made, emotionally charged and packs beautiful ambient instrumentals (respect that bass) to make a very good track number 1.
Hurt Feelings: 7.5/10 - Not very impressive musically but in this type of album it’s alright. Relaxed, rather laid back and it has its place too, though there ... read more
