Whenever I listen to a generational, classic album like this, there's always a 50/50 chance of it being the greatest musical experience of all time, or really really underwhelming. This is a good album. Its got some good songs, a good atmosphere, and what was probably amazing production for its time. My favourite part of this, though, is that it feels like a proto-Interpol, showing a very clear Pokemon-style evolution of the post-punk genre into my favourite album of all time. This does come with a clear downside, however: I could just be listening to Turn On The Bright Lights right now - same dark, depressive vibe across both albums, often with similiar instrumentation and vocal deliveries, but infinitely better done in my opinion. A solid album, but the sands of time have definitely eroded away at its once-great figure.
