Wow, this is actually really good. Often considered to be a return to form for these guys and for good reason. This album brings forth the liveliest set of tracks they’ve done since Sam’s Town. Now this album does have a very big sound to it. It’s definitely the biggest sounding album that they’ve ever done to date, and while that can maybe leave some moments sounding a little on the overproduced side, the amount of absolute bangers on here more then makes up for that to me.
The first half of this album is absolutely stacked. My Own Soul’s Warning is absolutely one of my favorite Killers tracks and is honestly one of my go to tracks for if I wanna listen to something that just gets me going in the morning. Blowback is a wonderful ballad with some nice swells and some neat electronic accentuations. Dying Breed is another absolutely massive sounding track that never fails to get me going either, plus I like how it kinda sounds like train tracks at the beginning (I’m not the only one hearing that right?). Caution is a really great lead single and is probably the catchiest track on the album imo, and Lightning Fields has some wonderful harmonization between Brandon and K.D. Lang. It’s another very powerful track
Now while the second half isn’t as back to back awesome as the first half is, there’s still a lot of moments that do give me a lot to latch onto. Running Towards a Place and When the Dreams Run Dry while not the biggest standouts do both have some really great driving forces like with some of the first half. Fire In Bone is definitely one of the more mixed tracks by a lot of people, but I found that one has honestly grown on me quite a bit tbh. It might sound a little awkward at first, but I like how it develops into something better as it progresses, and I really like the hook in the second half of the track. My God is another brilliant collab this time with Weyes Blood who also like K.D. Lang serves as a really nice back up to the track, plus the power that the chorus has is well worth the price of admission. The closing title track is definitely another grower for me as well. It’s got a more purely light hearted feel to it, but I’ve grown to really like how catchy it is and it serves as a really nice way to close the album.
I think this album is really great and pretty underrated in the grand scheme of things imo. Heck, I’m definitely in the minority for this opinion, but I actually personal enjoy this a little more then Hot Fuss just for how hard hitting and explosive it is
